Regional Government of Western Greece

The Regional Governance of Western Greece is one of the 13 regions of Greece. It is the secondary local government body, consisting of the former prefectures, now regional units, of Aitoloakarnania, Achaia and Ilia, and covers the northern and northwestern part of the Peloponnese, as well as the western part of Central Greece. The regional administration of Western Greece aims to improve the infrastructure and the investment environment, but also to promote the extroversion of Western Greece through the Regional Governor, the Deputy Regional Governors, the Directorates General, the Regional Council and the different governance bodies.

In terms of health management, the Regional Government supervises the the Public Health Directorate of Regional Government of Western Greece.

The Public Health Directorate is a branch of the Directorate-General for Public Health and Social Welfare of the Regional Governance of Western Greece. The responsibilities of the Directorate of Public Health and Social Welfare of the Region of Achaia are in particular to safeguard and improve the health and well-being of the population, to ensure public health through health control, the implementation of health legislation, the adoption of local health regulations, the adoption of measures on public hygiene issues, the imposition of sanctions, the issuing of opinions for the licensing of all businesses of sanitary interest, as well as to ensure environmental hygiene at the level of the Region.

The Public Health Directorate is made up of the following organisational units:

  • the Department of Health Services and Health Professions,
  • the Department of Public Health,
  • the Department of Health Prevention and
  • Promotion and the Office of Secretarial Support.
